ArtCraft is a set of creative software from the team behind Storyteller.ai, led by developer Brandon Thomas. The official site, getartcraft.com, describes it as "open source tools for artists" and says ArtCraft makes two things: the free Crafting Apps and the generative ArtCraft Studio. In October 2026 the Crafting Apps went viral as free, open-source look-alikes of Adobe Creative Cloud, which is why so many people are searching for "artcraft" right now.

This page sums up what is publicly known, with sources, so you can decide whether it is worth trying. For the short version: the apps are free, open source and run on macOS, Windows and Linux, but the project itself calls them early alpha, not ready to replace Adobe for professional work.

Quick facts
  • Made by: ArtCraft / Storyteller.ai team; lead developer Brandon Thomas (CineD)
  • Price: Crafting Apps are free, "no subscription required"; ArtCraft Studio's AI generations use paid credit plans (see Is ArtCraft free?)
  • License: MIT or Apache-2.0 (dual-licensed), per the project repositories and CineD
  • Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux; most apps also run in a browser via WebAssembly
  • Language: written in Rust, "No Electron, no web views" per the official apps page
  • Status: early alpha / in development
  • Official downloads: getartcraft.com/download and github.com/storytold (see our download guide)

The two halves of ArtCraft

1. The Crafting Apps (free, open source)

The official apps page lists "Fourteen apps. One craft." covering image editing, vector illustration, video, photography, PDFs, motion graphics, page layout, interface design, word processing, audio, presentations, CAD and spreadsheets. An installer called the ArtCraft Launcher installs all of them and keeps them updated; each app also has its own installers.

Mapping to Adobe/Microsoft products is how press coverage (CineD, Creative Bloq) and the apps' own descriptions frame them. The apps are independent re-implementations, not Adobe or Microsoft products. Each project says it is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Adobe.

2. ArtCraft Studio (generative AI)

ArtCraft Studio is the original ArtCraft product: an AI app for images and video where you compose a scene yourself (2D and 3D compositing, character posing, image-to-3D mesh, background removal, "Image to Location") and then render it with image and video models. The official site lists models such as Seedance and Nano Banana. It runs on the desktop or in the browser at app.getartcraft.com. Generations use credits sold on paid plans.

Why ArtCraft went viral in October 2026

According to Ars Technica, ArtCraft "got its start last year as a 'controllable AI for artists'" and then pivoted to a suite of open-source apps recreating the interface and tools of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign and Acrobat Pro. Thomas announced them on Reddit and Hacker News. He said he used Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 to write "clean-room replacements" in Rust, and that he was motivated by Adobe's cancellation fee. Later, AI-built takes on Word, Excel and PowerPoint (WordCraft, GridCraft, DeckCraft) followed, as Creative Bloq reported.

Interest grew fast. CineD reported PhotoCraft passed 40,000 GitHub stars by October 11, and on November 1, 2026 the storytold/photocraft repository showed about 75,000 stars. More numbers are on our ArtCraft GitHub page.

How good is it? The honest picture

The developers don't oversell it. Thomas told Hacker News the project is "not anywhere close to ready" (InfoQ). PhotoCraft's own roadmap, as InfoQ reported on October 11, put feature breadth at about 76% of Photoshop but "readiness for real work" at about 45%. CineD reported FilmCraft at about 86% feature breadth against Premiere Pro and about 56% ready for real work. Known gaps include plugin support, PSD files that Photoshop doesn't always accept, and missing Premiere project import and Camera RAW in FilmCraft.

Reviewers are split. Creative Bloq found "big problems" but called the apps light (around 50 MB each) and easy to install without an account. XDA said that for hobbyists and light work, switching is "probably safe." Our full comparison is in ArtCraft vs Adobe.

Frequently asked questions

What is ArtCraft?

ArtCraft is creative software from the Storyteller.ai team led by Brandon Thomas. It has two parts: free, open-source Crafting Apps (PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, GridCraft, DeckCraft, CADCraft and others) written in Rust, and ArtCraft Studio, a generative AI app for images and video.

Who made ArtCraft?

Software developer Brandon Thomas, previously CEO of Storyteller.ai (the company behind FakeYou), leads the project, according to CineD and Ars Technica. The code lives under the storytold organization on GitHub.

Is ArtCraft made by Adobe?

No. ArtCraft is an independent project. Its apps are clean-room re-implementations modeled on Adobe's interfaces, and each project says it is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Adobe.

Is ArtCraft free?

The Crafting Apps are free and open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, with no subscription. ArtCraft Studio's AI image and video generations use paid credit plans. See our pricing guide.

Is ArtCraft open source?

Yes. The Crafting Apps are open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 and are published at github.com/storytold.

What platforms does ArtCraft run on?

macOS, Windows and Linux, with FreeBSD builds for some apps. Most apps also compile to WebAssembly and run in a browser tab.

Can ArtCraft replace Photoshop?

Not yet for professional work, by the project's own estimate. PhotoCraft's roadmap put its readiness for real work at about 45% in October 2026, although it covers much of Photoshop's feature surface.

Was ArtCraft written by AI?

Brandon Thomas has said he used Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 to write the apps in Rust. He describes them as clean-room implementations with no Adobe code.
